New hi-tech weapon for US police

The US police will soon be equipped with a new controversial weapon in their arsenal, a high-tech flashlight called LED Incapacitator. The handheld device using light-emitting diodes to emit super-bright pulses of light at rapidly changing wavelengths causes disorientation, nausea and even vomiting in whomever it is pointed at.

"Flashblindness, the "Oh my gosh this light is really bright, I can't see anything behind it". That effect is immediate for everybody," said Bob Lieberman, president of Intelligent Optical Systems the company producing the device.

According to Lieberman, the device flashes LED lights at several specific frequencies. Before your brain has time to adjust to one frequency, the Incapacitator flashes another. Add multiple colors and random pulses and the brain would not be able to keep up.

Those with first-hand experience say they saw spots in their vision, which stayed with them for about a half hour after the test and then they underwent a pounding headache.

There is grave concern as to how officers would be trained to handle the device, and if they would misuse the weapon. The US police often use tasers, rubber bullets and pepper spray to handle and disperse crowds during riots or chaotic situations.
